We all know that visiting your dentist every six months is crucial to preventing problems developing, but what are we looking for during your comprehensive examination?

Your dentist will check all aspects of your mouth, teeth, jaws and gums. They will examine for gum disease, plaque, gum recession, bleeding, sensitivity, tooth decay, health of existing restorations, your bite, tooth wear, jaw joint movement and any clicking, health of the mouth and tongue, oral cancer, discuss your general health any cosmetic concerns that you may have.

The examination includes dental x-rays were necessary and your dentist will also remove plaque and tartar and discuss any necessary treatments you may need.

Gum disease and regular check ups

Looking after your gums is as important as looking after your teeth. Gum disease is a very common condition in adults and it is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth.

The build-up of plaque irritates your gums and can lead to infection and inflammation. This can eventually make gums sore, red and swollen. If you have the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis), your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth and you may have bad breath.

If gingivitis is not treated, it can develop to a more serious condition - periodontitis. This affects the tissues that support teeth and hold them in place. If periodontitis is not treated your teeth can become loose and may eventually fall out.
As gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, which is why it’s treatment and control is the single most important issue in dental care.

The build-up of plaque and tartar in your mouth is a continuous process, which is why a professional clean with your dentist or hygienist is a really good way to keep gum disease at bay.
We want to keep you motivated to maintain your teeth and gums to be the best that they can be. You can rest assured that at your check up we screen for gum disease and give you advice on how to address it.New paragraph
